Melissa Doherty attended the University of Waterloo,  graduating with an Honours Bachelor of Arts ( Fine Art, Studio specialization) and was recently awarded the Laura Ciruls Painting Award from the Ontario Arts Foundation. Doherty was shortlisted in 2002 for the RBC Canadian Painting Competition and is a recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the Waterloo Regional Arts Fund. Melissa Doherty is one of 200 painters included in Carte Blanche Vol. 2: Painting, a survey of contemporary painting in Canada.  Her work has been exhibited at the Musee des beaux Arts, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Harbourfront Centre Toronto, the University of Toronto,  Galerie Art Mur in Montreal and Cristinerose Gallery in New York. She is a former member of the Red Head Collective in Toronto. Her work is represented in many public and private collections, including Sir Elton John and David Furnish, BMO, RBC,  the Progressive Art Collection (U.S.), the FEMMARTE Collection, and the University of Toronto.
